Innovating Assessment: Enhancing Academic Integrity with eMedley’s Auto-Random Test System
Securing the future of health science evaluations through intelligent randomization.
In the high-stakes environment of health sciences education, ensuring the integrity and depth of student assessments is paramount. Whether in a didactic classroom or a fast-paced clinical rotation, educators need tools that provide a fair, comprehensive, and secure evaluation of student knowledge. At eMedley, we pride ourselves on being the most comprehensive academic management platform for health sciences, and our commitment to continuous innovation is driven by the specific needs of our partners.
Recently, a client approached us with a unique challenge: they needed a way to provide individualized assessments to a large cohort of students while maintaining consistent content coverage across the board. The goal was to eliminate the risk of peer-to-peer answer sharing without compromising the educational standards of the exam.
- Secure Randomized Testing: Automatically generates unique, individualized assessments for every student to eliminate answer sharing and enhance academic integrity.
- Intelligent Content Distribution: Allows administrators to define precise “blueprints” by pulling specific quantities of questions from different subject banks and difficulty levels.
- Automated Operational Sync: Seamlessly integrates with clinical schedules and gradebooks to trigger assessments based on student tracks and import scores instantly.
The Challenge: Balancing Variety and Consistency
For many programs, the traditional “one-size-fits-all” exam model presents a security risk. However, manually creating dozens of different versions of an exam is a significant administrative burden. The client envisioned a system where a test could be “automatically” generated for each student, drawing from a vast question bank while ensuring that every student was tested on the same core competencies.
As the client noted, they wanted the ability to state that an exam should be made up of, for example, 2 questions from a cardiovascular item bank and 5 questions from a pulmonary item bank. Furthermore, they needed to ensure a balance of cognitive difficulty—specifically linking questions to high-level and low-level Bloom’s Taxonomy.
The Solution: eMedley’s Auto-Random Test System
To meet this need, eMedley developed the Auto-Random Tests feature within our examN assessment module. This custom solution provides faculty with unprecedented control over the test-generation process.
1. Intelligent Question Pulling
Rather than a simple random shuffle, the Auto-Random Test system allows administrators to designate specific question banks and define exactly how many questions to pull from each. This ensures that while every student receives a unique set of questions, the “blueprint” of the exam remains uniform.
2. Advanced Alignment Filtering
To address the need for cognitive balance, we implemented logic that allows users to filter questions by specific alignments. This means a test can be configured to pull one question from a “high-level Bloom’s Taxonomy” category and another from a “low-level” category within the same subject bank. This level of granularity ensures that the rigor of the assessment remains consistent across all randomized versions.
3. Seamless Clinical Integration
Health sciences programs are dynamic, especially during clinical rotations. We built custom logic into the scheduling forms to detect when new students are enrolled in a clinical course. The system can then automatically create a new submission for that student based on their specific clinical schedule, ensuring that assessments are administered at the right time in their learning journey.
4. Automated Gradebook Syncing
Efficiency is key for faculty. We modified the examN gradebook structure to support direct score importing from these auto-randomized tests. Once a student completes their individualized exam, their score is automatically reflected in the gradebook, eliminating manual data entry and reducing the risk of errors.
Strengthening Education Through Customization
This new feature set goes beyond simple randomization. By integrating the Auto-Random Test system with eMedley’s broader ecosystem—including clinical schedules and the eduCATE LMS—we’ve provided a solution that is both secure and highly adaptable.
For programs moving toward competency-based education (CBE), this system offers a way to track mastery across diverse topics with precision. It allows educators to focus on what matters most: preparing students for the complexities of clinical practice.
